ABOUT THE RESIDENCY
Whitefish Bay, on the Door Peninsula in Wisconsin, has long been a creative haven for artists who are an important part of the local community and bring the process of creating art into daily life. Inspired by the history of the Dome House and the vibrant artistic community in Door County, the Al & Mickey Quinlan Residency gives an artist the opportunity to create work in a unique environment providing inspiration and solitude.
The Dome House Al & Mickey Quinlan Artist Residency is open to one artist residing in the Midwest working in the fine art mediums of drawing, painting, printmaking, photography and other mediums. The residency aims to provide the space and support to create work in an inspiring and unique location, in addition to providing opportunities for public access to an artist at work through public programming and educational content for the community. The Al & Mickey Quinlan Residency is an 8-week fall program created and led in partnership with the Miller Art Museum.
FACILITIES, STUDIO SPACE & EQUIPMENT: The space includes free computer and internet access and all utilities. Due to the unique nature of the home, the facility is not accessible. An industrial sink, work tables and wall space are available. Artist in residence (AIR) shall advise the Miller in a timely manner of any special needs or requirements AIR may require for a safe and comfortable residency.
STIPEND & SUPPORT: Artist in residence (AIR) will receive a $500 stipend to support creative endeavors while in residence at the Dome House Al & Mickey Quinlan Artist Residency. The stipend is to be used for professional supplies, shipping of supplies and artwork, and, if applicable, other residency-related expenses outside of the Miller’s stated obligations. The stipend can also be used for personal expenses outside of the residency. No receipts or accounting of expenditures are required.
EDUCATION & OUTREACH: AIR will be expected to actively engage the public through educational outreach for a minimum of 5 hours per week.
HOUSING & MEALS: AIR from outside of the Door County area will have living quarters in a semi-private loft space at the Dome House, which also houses the adjacent studio/work space. The space is fully furnished. Basic cooking equipment will be provided; AIR will be responsible for groceries and preparation of meals. AIR is expected to cover personal living expenses, additional materials and supplies above those furnished and any other expenses relating to the cost of producing work incurred while in the program. Because of the unique nature of its design, the Dome House is prone to temperature fluctuations; artists should be prepared for this, especially cooler temperatures during early fall, and plan accordingly.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS: The Residency is sensitive to the program’s environmental impact on the living and working space in the Dome House and the environs in which it is located. Artists will be expected to work with non-toxic materials only, and adhere to safe disposal protocols.
ABOUT THE MILLER MUSEUM
Founded in 1975 through the generosity of Gerhard and Ruth Miller, the Miller Art Museum is Door County’s year-round center for exhibition, education and creative enrichment in the visual arts and the Peninsula’s only fine art museum, housing a dynamic permanent collection of 20th c. Wisconsin art. The Museum’s main gallery features regularly changing exhibitions, embracing a wide range of subjects and media, both historic and contemporary; the second floor Gerhard CF Miller wing surveys the extraordinary life and work of celebrated dean of Door County artists Gerhard CF Miller.
